The East Midlands Leadership Academy’s Emerging Leaders Programme has been selected by the prestigious Cape Town University in South Africa as an example of good practice for workplace based learning.
Two members of the EMLA team will attend the global Innovation in Formal Training conference, organised by the university, to deliver a presentation on the programme and its outcomes to date. The conference takes place at the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, Cape Town from 17th – 19th August 2015.
The Emerging Leaders programme launched in 2009 and is all about developing NHS leaders of the future; developing new skills, enhancing their capabilities, providing new challenging experiences and boosting their confidence.
An integral part of the course is that participants undertake service improvement projects. These focus on improving the experience of patients and their families and friends, providing a tangible means through which delegates practice their developing leadership skills.
Former programme delegate, Laura Waddington who works for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust completed the course last year and says, “The Emerging Leaders course was a fantastic opportunity, and I regularly use the tools I discovered. I learned a great deal about myself, especially within the coaching sessions, which has raised my awareness and my ability to work effectively.”
Deputy Director of the East Midlands Leadership Academy, Lyndsay Short says, “It’s a privilege to be invited to showcase this work on a world stage and a fantastic opportunity for us to network with colleagues from across the globe and to share our experience and expertise.
“The Emerging Leaders Programme has had a real impact over the years and has enabled participants to really improve the experience for patients and their carers. We’re very proud to have been involved in shaping the future for patients through these emerging leaders and look forward to continued involvement.”
